Switzerland is renowned as being one of the most popular holiday destinations in the winter months due to its brilliant ski resorts with exhilirating pistes and beautiful views, but unfortunately it has only just begun to take off as a golf holiday destination.

With almost 100 golf courses housing around 50,000 golf members golf in Switzerland is really starting to take off not only with the locals but tourists too. The Alps are home to some brilliant golf courses which at high altitude add a few extra yards to your drives - great for a long drive contest. In and around Lake Geneva is another spot where there are some quality golf courses thanks to the beautiful natural surroundings.

Golf Club de Lausanne has long been recognised as one of the best places to play golf since its renovation by English golf architect Jeremy Pern in the mid 1990's.

The club is located on the shore of Lake Geneva around 10 miles from Lausanne. It's a beautiful parkland course which is carved through woodland; trees flank the fairways on every hole and there are views of the Lake, and on clear days, the Alps can be seen on the horizon, which further enhance the experience had by all.

The course itself has quite an old fashioned layout with short par 4's being backed up by long par 5's adding up to a total distance of around 6200 metres. The old fashioned element doesn't hold true when it comes to the maintanence of the course however with the renovation bringing about new irrigation and drainage systems that allow the course to be played in all weather conditions.

Another course located on the shores of Lake Geneva is  Golf Club de Domaine Impérial, a rare Pete Dye designed course which opened in 1987. Located between Lausanne and Geneva, the course is located on an estate that was once owned by the brother of Napoleon Bonaparte, Joseph and was inherited in 1971 by Victor Morf who immediately set about trying to find an architect to build a first-class golf course. 15 years later and the first man to ever hit a drive down the first fairway was the late, great Seve Ballesteros - a quite brilliant welcome indeed!

Amongst the golf courses in the Alps, the one that stands out for us is the brilliant  Engelberg-Titlis Golf Club which is located on comparatively flat ground nestled in amongst the intimidating snow tipped mountains of the Alps offering impressive views all over the golf course.

The golfing season in Switzerland is relatively short with the snowy conditions of the Alps meaning that the golf courses in the region are only normally open from May till October.

After your round of golf, you can either put your feet up and enjoy the warm hospitality that the hotels have to offer or go and explore the wondrous sights on offer. From the Lavaux Vineyards on the banks of Lake Geneva to the Grande Dixence, a 1000 foot dam located just to the south of Sion, there's something on offer for everyone. If you're feeling adventurous then there are numerous paths to trek in the summer months through the mountains of the Alps.

There are five international airports in Switzerland that offer daily flights to and from all major European cities but it's almost just as easy to get there by train, bus or even your own car. Having arrived in the country, the public transport system is brilliant and you can get from one side of the country to the other with ease by train or bus several times a day.

With the beautiful natural scenery of the Alps and Lake Geneva and the first class hospitality on offer, Switzerland is fast becoming known as a fantastic golf holiday destination. No longer regarded as only a winter holiday destination, Switzerland has so much to offer golfers of all abilities and tastes.

Take a look at the  brilliant golf holiday packages available on our website and enjoy a golf holiday of real quality!

    Incredible views!
I decided to take a break with some friends and we were originally just going going to go to Switzerland for a skiing holiday, but then we found the club and thought, why not? It turned out to be a great decision because we could spend a day on the slopes followed by a day on the green and we definitely got the best out of one of the top golf courses in the country. The fairways and greens were very well kept, as we went around easter time, so there was a lot of sun and not as much snowfall and the views were just incredible - there really is no better view from a golf course than the Swiss Alps! The facilities were great as well, and we enjoyed the amazing food there as we looked out onto the snowy mountain tops - an amazing experience!

A beautiful course! First class practice facility! We were made to feel very welcome and the course was in tip top condition. Shallow but exciting fairways, that were a joy for any golfer. Excellent service in the restaurant and the food was fantastic! This was a brilliant day's golf and I would love to come back again one day.
