Golf in Sweden is more popular than it has ever been. Many say that this is due to the exploits of the legendary Annika Sorenstam and, more recently, Henrik Stenson who have shown that they can perform alongside the very best and thus inspiring a new generation of golfers.

The achievements of these players may be surprising to a lot of people due to the long winters that the country experiences, however they probably do not know about the quality of golf courses in Sweden!

The Swedish landscape is an absolute dream for golf course architects. Several links courses use the jagged, rough coastlines and massive sand dunes to great effect, and others are routed through the thick dense woodlands with meandering brooks. The modern-day designs seamlessly fit into the diverse natural landscapes.

With over 400 golf courses, that are the home of over 500,000 members, there is plenty of variety to suit golfers of all tastes and abilities; this is one of the many reasons that golf holidays in Sweden are becoming increasingly popular!

Scania, the southernmost Swedish province,  is without doubt the most popular golfing region for both visitors and locals. Some of the links courses in the province have been said to match the best in the United Kingdom on their day!

One such course, Falsterbo Golf Club, is located on Sweden's southernmost tip on the beautiful Falsterbo peninsula. The course was founded as a 9-hole course in 1909 before being extended to a full 18 in 1930 - only two holes remain from the original design. The short par five 18th is the course's signature hole; the beautiful white sand beach and Baltic Sea run parallel to the hole and the green is often reachable in two if the winds not too strong against.

Henrik Stenson's home club Barsebäck Golf & Country Club, located on the west coast of Scania in the north of Malmo, is home to not one, but two first-class golf courses. The Masters Course, opened in 1969, is a real brute designed by Ture Bruce. It was the host of the Solheim Cup in 2003 and has also hosted several Scandinavian Masters tournaments. The other course, named after the designer of the course Donald Steel (a former golfer and renowned golf course architect), opened to great critical acclaim in 1989.

If you want to play at the golf course which is renowned as Sweden's best however, you must head to Stockholm - which is surprisingly home to more than 70 golf courses.

The Stadium Course at Bro Hoff Slott Golf Club only opened in 2007 but has quickly established itself as the pick of an excellent bunch available in Sweden.  The course took over from the Masters at Barsebäck as the host of the Scandinavian Masters in 2010.

The course's architect, Robert Trent Jones Jnr, said that having walked over the land just once he believed that 'Mother Earth must have created this area for a golf course!'

Away from golf, Sweden has so much to offer you. There are a huge amount of museums, galleries and beautiful pieces of architecture in all the major cities or if you feel like relaxing, head to one of the numerous first-class spas.

Getting to Sweden is very easy as there are so many options available! Flying direct to Stockholm or getting the ferry from Germany, Denmark or Norway are the most favoured options but if you can't get a direct flight to Stockholm then head to Copenhagen and drive across - this is also sometimes easier if you are planning on playing in Scania.

If you're not fussed about the weather and want to play at some of the best golf courses in Europe, then Sweden is definitely the place for you. The diverse landscape means that there is a tremendous variety of options to suit all tastes and abilities.

    Stupendous course
Having recently had a very enjoyable round at this course, i think its only fair to write a review to sing its praises. The course was very open in places which suited my driving as of late as i've been struggling with accuracy. Having said that, on some holes the rough proved havoc for me. the greens were good and held their line which is key for good putting and obvs good scores.. The staff were very friendly and i highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area.

    Wonderful Course
I recently played this course during a visit to my family in sweden. I stayed for 2 weeks so i had enough time to fit a round in without anyone kicking off. I thought it was a great corse, suiting my golf style. I played an average round of golf but it didnt stop me enjoying the course. Perfect and was what i was looking for in sweden. Highly recommend it!!!

I recently played here whilst on a mid-season holiday to Sweden as my boys really needed it. I read the good reviews of this course and decided to make the visit the course was better than the reviews said. The greens were fantastic, i putted brilliantly. smooth and true roll.... Fairways also great as they didn't have any divots on them, all were replaced and recovering... I would recommend to anyone to go down and visit this course.. the staff are friendly as well!!!
