Golf in Slovenia is on the rise. In the last decade the number of registered players in the country has more than doubled and there are various exciting developments for new golf resorts. The beautiful scenery and diverse landscape mean that the country’s thirteen golf courses are all set in stunning surroundings. The golf courses are all well-maintained and have brilliant facilities for everyone to enjoy – the majority are located in the attractive Slovenian countryside.

The natural beauty that Slovenia’s landscape has to offer really enhances the quality of golf courses. Playing golf in Slovenia allows you to take a step out of the hectic, modern world and relax – strolling leisurely down the fairways whilst taking in the crisp, fresh air and breath-taking views.

Slovenia’s first course was opened in 1938 for the king of Yugoslavia. Bled Golf and Country Club, in its early years, hosted royal families from all over Europe including the Duke of Kent. However, the war and post-war period saw the course being abandoned resulting in a much needed makeover which came in 1972.  Don Harradine renovated the course and reignited the interest that was initially shown when the course first opened. A 9-hole Lake Course  was opened in 1993 which has put Bled Golf and Country Club firmly back on the map!

Bled King’s Course is still seen as one of the most beautiful courses in the whole of Europe; it is in a magical setting – the snow topped mountains of the Julian Alps provide the backdrop for the course which is carved through thick woodland. The course is also known for its wildlife with a vast array of different bird species settling on the wonderful parkland.

The Bled Golf and Country Club is within an hour’s drive of seven other courses in Austria and Italy as well as Slovenia making it a great focal point for your golf holiday!

A little over an hour’s drive or so from Bled is Golf Klub Otocec, a golf course situated next to the river Krka. The course was originally nine holes but became eighteen in 2009 – it has been crowned as Slovenia’s best golf course several times. Tight undulating fairways flanked by dense woodland make this course a challenge for golfers of all abilities; the epic scenery and the huge clubhouse are stereotypical of a Slovenian golf course – they further increase the enjoyment had by all.

Away from the golf, if you’re playing at Bled Golf and Country Club, Lake Bled is a beautiful place to visit. There’s a medieval castle which is, according to the locals, ‘magical’. You can ride across to the castle on wooden rowing boats which are available for hire.

The coast in Slovenia is also very pretty. Although there are no real beaches, there are lots of sweet little towns with fresh seafood restaurants – sometimes you’ll see fishermen catching what you’re about to eat!

Ljubljana Joze Pucnik Airport, around 20 miles from the capital is the main international link for Slovenia. There are flights to and from the airport daily to some of the major European airports. It was recently renovated bringing it into line with EU requirements. There are lots of plans underway to improve the public transport system and road networks which, at the moment, are still somewhat stuck in the 20th century. The majority of the golf packages available include airport transfer.

The past decade has seen the quality of golf in Slovenia improve immeasurably with various courses opening such as Klub Otecec. This has encouraged the Slovenian public to get into golf and there are now a record number of members at golf clubs. As a holiday destination, whatever Slovenia lacks in quantity it certainly makes up for it with the quality of golf courses.

    A tough guy
Challenging, tough and beautiful. The clubhouse and driving range. All the houses are built with logs that must be from the forest that we took down. But the track is an open path with only a single hole which is skogshål. Exciting and worth a visit.

The Arboretum is now a very good course!
From the start was that all new tracks nor Arboretum a top course, but I've been playing it since its inception and can only say that I am more than satisfied with the changes that the Club has made. Today, it is a very good track in exciting nature, well-kept, pleasant staff and good food. Recommended.
