The popularity of golf in Slovakia has been increasing over the past few years; it wasn't all that long ago that it was considered to be an exclusive sport but the opinion is beginning to change.

The number of golf courses in Slovakia has been continuously growing and there are now more than twenty, the newest (and some of the old ones) offer brilliant services and the price of golf is relatively cheap in comparison to its European counterparts.

With the number of golf courses increasing at a rapid rate, the number of players is also going up. Courses such as Black River in Bratislava and Gray Bear in Tále have set the mark for the future developments in the country and they have also really whetted the appetite of the Slovak public who wait in anticipation for what is to come!

Black River was opened to the public in 2006, and quickly became known as an absolute monster of a course! The first six holes are part of the original course built in 1993 after Slovakia's separation from the Czech Republic. Holes 2-4 are unusually consecutive par 3's allowing you to ease yourself into the mammoth task ahead. The course finishes with two tough par 4's; the tee shot on the 430 yard 17th is hit onto an island fairway before hitting your approach onto an island green - both balls and matches are lost on this hole alone!

Gray Bear was the first ever 18-hole course to come out of Slovakia in 2003. Carved through dense woodland in the Tále National Park, the course was designed by the English company, Southern Golf Ltd - architects of the critically acclaimed Kingsbarns in Scotland. The signature hole of the course is the par four, 6th. Played in between two par 3's, the 416 yard hole is protected at all times by streams; firstly the tee shot offers a 'risk and reward' philosophy with a stream running across the landing area before having to hit your approach to the heavily protected green - there are 3 separate streams protecting the green to the left, right and in front! Prepare to damage your score early doors!

The golfing season in Slovakia usually lasts for around seven months between April and October, similar to the majority of its Eastern European counterparts. The best time to play is usually in the middle of summer where temperatures usually hit the mid 20's and the courses are in the best condition possible.

Away from the golf, this landlocked country is steeped in history - giving you a lot of things to see and do. The major cities are home to some beautiful architecture as well as many museums and galleries for the culture buffs among you to enjoy! One of the main attractions is the Andy Warhol museum in Medzilaborce which is home to some of his original artwork - Warhol was the son of Slovak parents.

You'll find that life in Slovakia is much more easy going and tranquil than in many other popular golf destinations around Europe making your holiday a much more enjoyable experience!

M. R. Stefanik Airport is the biggest international airport in Slovakia and there are daily flights to and from over 40 major European destinations allowing you to book your flights with ease.

Golf in Slovakia is still comparatively in its infancy and thus, it doesn't possess the draw that other more established golfing destinations offer. However, some of the courses in Slovakia are of real quality and with some exciting developments in the pipeline we must keep a firm eye on golf in Slovakia!

People often overlook Slovakia when it comes to golfing holidays which is a crying shame in my eyes as this course is great, and somewhat of an undiscovered gem in the country. The course is unique and interesting and will appeal to golfers of all skill sets. I really enjoyed my time here and would definitely play here again, the only thing I would say is that the course could do with a little more attention but nothing major.

    Great Value Course!
This is a great course but you need quite a bit of local knowledge as it is a very challenging course with hidden obstacles on every hole, but every hole is a beautiful one. The scenery around this course was spectacular. The round was excellent value for money!
