The rise in the popularity of golf in Poland has been remarkable. The sport has been played in the country for longer than you may think, with two 9-hole courses being opened at the start of the 20th century however the popularity of the sport stalled somewhat until the end of the communist era in 1992.

The opening of the country’s first 18-hole course First Warsaw Golf & Country Club, around half an hour from the centre of Warsaw, sparked a newfound interest in the sport. In the past twenty years, over twenty first-class courses have been opened with endless new projects being talked about.

Poland is also an official host of the European Tour; Toya Golf Club  is the latest club to host a prestigious event after holding the Deutsche Bank Polish Masters, a Challenge Tour event, in September 2013.

Despite the distinct lack of courses, around twenty five, there are some truly spectacular designs planned by some of the most renowned golf course architects in the world.

All of Poland’s regions are home to golf courses of high quality. The most popular regions are Gdansk, Krakow, Warsaw and Wroclaw within which there are ten golf courses rated as championship standard locations.

Gdansk is home to Postolowo Golf Club, one of the longest courses in Europe – an intimidating 7,758 yards from the back tees! Designed by revered Brit Jeremy Turner, the course opened its doors to the public in 1990. There are numerous dramatic golf holes thanks to the wonderful lake which creates a breath-taking experience for all visitors.

First Warsaw Golf & Country Club is regarded as the catalyst in launching Poland as a golfing destination. Set amongst more than 150 acres of beautiful greenery, the course is routed around forests and lakes making it a tough proposition for golfers of all abilities. The course has hosted three European Tour Challenge events – the Polish Open and two Warsaw Golf Opens.

On the border with Slovakia, under the watchful eyes of the Tatra Mountains lies Krakow. More renowned for its museums and vibrant atmosphere, the city is also home to some great golf courses. Host of the 2008 Polish Seniors Championship won by Ian Woosnam, Krakow Golf and Country Club  has shown in its brief history it is up there with the best that Poland has to offer. Opened in 2004, the course was designed by Ron Fream and his Golfplan design company which has designed some brilliant courses throughout Western Europe and this one more than matches them all!

Poland has a great mixture of parkland golf courses routed through thick woods and others that have more of a links feel overseeing great mountains – there really is something for all tastes!

Away from the golf, Poland has a fantastic combination of strong traditional values and diverse natural beauty. Its diverse landscapes and historic cities come together to make it an extremely popular tourist destination. The magnificent architecture on offer from its cities which are filled with history means that there is always something to see or do. Combine this with the incredible nightlife that the country is famed for makes this the perfect place to go if you’re looking for a good, cheap time with your mates.

Like many of its Eastern European counterparts, Poland has the potential to become one of the most popular golfing destinations across the whole of Europe. Despite golf in Poland having roots back at the beginning of the 1900’s, it only really took off at the turn of the Millennium. The quality of courses that have been built during the last ten to twenty years are up there with the best and it’s no surprise that the popularity of golfing holidays in Poland is at an all-time high!

  • Postolowo Golf Club
    Tough course
Played Postolowo with freshly-prepared Greens which made the round a bit sadder. Great environment, beautiful scenery and a challenging course, but perhaps not in the best condition when we played.
