Golf is relatively new to Lithuania; the Lithuanian Golf Federation (LGF) was founded in the year 2000. The main aims of the LGF are to increase the number of Lithuanians playing golf, oversee the development of new golf courses and boost golf tourism in the country.

At the moment, golf is overshadowed by the extremely popular basketball and strongman. However, the LGF say that they just need one golfer to come through the ranks to become a successful professional for popularity of golf in Lithuania to explode!

The golf season in Lithuania, like many of its Eastern European counterparts is between April and October. The temperature averages in the mid to late twenties in July which is probably when the courses are really in peak condition – they are of course well maintained throughout the year.

Golf in Lithuania has been boosted by the opening of two 18-hole championship standard courses over the past few years.

The Peter Chamberlain designed Capitals course opened to the public in 2005 – the name was given due to the course being located midway between all four of Lithuania’s historical capitals (Kaunas, Kernav, Trakai and Vilnius). Capitals was awarded the 2007 International Development of the Year prize from the golf business magazine, GofInc.

The course meanders around the diverse landscape of dense forests and lakes and streams creating a challenge for golfers of all abilities. Although the course is designed with the Lithuanian public in mind, it has the perfect set up for tournaments with the adjacent hills providing a natural spot for spectators and TV coverage.

In 2012, Lithuania opened another course to challenge Capitals as the best golf course in Lithuania. The V Club is located alongside Le Meridien Hotel at Villon, within an estate with more than 300 acres!

PGA Design, the architects of the course, were met by a few small holes and a rundown driving range on arrival at the estate but made major renovations building the course to meet the strict USGA requirements. The fairways are sand based and are carved through the dense forest. There are also water hazards to contend with on the majority of the holes take plenty of balls!

The golf club also has a 9-hole par three course giving newcomers the opportunity to hone their skills in a less intimidating environment – there are however two island greens that even the most experienced of golfers could easily slip up on.

Both courses are within 40 miles of the centre of Vilnius, the nation’s decorative capital. The attractive buildings combined with the value for money, the vibrant atmosphere of the city, and the brilliant nightlife explain why the city is fast becoming one of the most popular city break destinations in Eastern Europe.

The city is also filled with various restaurants and bars. The drinks are relatively cheap for Europe – don’t expect to pay more than 1 euro for a beer!

Getting to Lithuania has never been easier – the European Commission recently described Lithuania as the main transport centre in the whole of Europe. Lithuania has a railway that connects Scandinavia with Central Europe and is also the main connection linking the East to the rest of Europe.

Vilnius is home to the country’s largest airport and connects with the majority of Europe’s major airports. The other option of getting to Lithuania is by ferry and the seaport of Klaipeda has daily trips to and from a variety of European countries. Both ports are under development at the moment with complete renovation and expansions planned.
