The popularity of golf in Hungary has improved over the past few years and with lots of plans in place to improve the quality and quantity of courses, the popularity is expected to soar! There are currently twelve golf courses in the country, with the majority being in and around the country’s capital, Budapest.

The game of golf was first played in Hungary way back in 1909 and the sport’s reputation grew throughout the early 20th century. However, like most of the Eastern European countries, the status of golf in Hungary has been affected by the fact it was banned during previous socialist times. The first Hungarian Golf Federation was set up in 1989 and as well as thousands of regular players, the country also boasts some quality courses.

One of the best golf courses in Hungary is Pannonia Golf and Country Club . Located around half an hour’s drive from the centre of Budapest, the course is set on land which was once owned by the Habsburg family. The golf course was designed by renowned Austrian architect, G. Erhardt, and opened in 1997. The ongoing maintenance of the course makes sure that the condition of the greens and fairways never deteriorates. The club also offers many other attractive services; from horse riding to swimming – there are a plethora of options for your kids to do whilst playing your round, or for you to relax after your round.

A bit further out from Budapest to the south is the European Lakes Golf and Country Club . It’s set in and around the stunning surroundings of the Zselic Nature Reserve, near Lake Balaton, which means that it isn’t rare to see the local wildlife during a round in the early hours of the morning. The club has a hotel on sight as well as a fantastic restaurant which specialises in seafood and offers a vast array of quality wine from Hungary.

There are numerous plans afoot to increase the number of golf courses and resorts in Hungary, with the majority looking to be situated in and around the Balaton Lake and a few in Budapest.

The golfing season in Hungary, like the majority of Continental Europe, is normally between March and November. Being landlocked by seven countries means that there’s no chance of playing on any links courses! The climate is again similar to its neighbours and that means that the hot, dry summers are the most popular time to play golf in Spain.

After your round of golf, there is plenty to see and do in Hungary. On the outskirts of Budapest, the rustic atmosphere and backdrop allows for a lot of outdoor activities like fishing and climbing. The city itself has an absorbing atmosphere; you will be surrounded by epic buildings filled with history and culture whilst the River Danube meanders its way around you through the city.

Budapest is renowned for its music scene, with numerous festivals and concerts staged there every week. Combine this with the numerous art galleries – it could be argued that Budapest is amongst the biggest cultural hubs in the UK.

Most major airlines fly to and from Liszt Ferenc International Airport in Budapest daily making it easy for you to get to Hungary. Once arrived, both the road and rail networks are of an extremely high standard and make travel across the country easy.

Although it may not be known for the quality of golf on offer, Hungary has plenty to offer for your next golf holiday. Take a look at the various packages  on offer on our website and see if anything takes your fancy!

  • Magyar Golf Club
    Nice gateaway weekend!
If you are looking for a nice, pleasant and reasonably cheap week-end for golf, Magyar Golf Club is the place for you. The course has a great lay out, full of challenges and unique features. There are plenty of facilities to improve your technique and the staff are very friendly and helpful. The cherry on the cake is the price of tee-times and most of the purchases that you will make there, which are well below the average for that club category.

  • Balaton Golf Club
Hungarian golf in its purest form
I have played this course twice now, and both experiences have been unforgettable. Challenging course with wide fairways, fast greens and breathtaking views of the countryside not to mention the helpful staff.
