Golf in Finland

With over 120 stunning golf courses, including more than 20 within an hour of Helsinki Vantaa Airport, it’s surprising that golf holidays in Finland are not more popular.

The fact that there were only a handful of golf courses in Finland in the 1980’s shows that golf in Finland is still in its infancy, yet some of the courses are truly first-class; and the number of Finns playing golf – now more than 100,000 - suggests that there is much more to come.

Finland is home to one of the best up and coming courses in the whole of Europe in Linna Golf . Opened in 2005, the course is a part of the European Tour Courses group and has already held Challenge Tour events. Their main aim is to host a European Tour event in the near future; and having received high praise from a variety of big names in the golfing world, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see this happening sooner rather than later.

Halfway between Linna Golf and Helsinki lies Kytäjä Golf , the home of two outstanding courses ( North West  and South East ) designed by the Canadian architect Thomas McBroom at the beginning of the 21st century.

In the north-west of Helsinki itself, you will find Helsinki Golf Club . The course is set amongst the land of a 19th century Manor House, Tali Manor, which acts as the club house. In recent years, the club has become a regular fixture on the Ladies European Tour and has hosted more tournaments than any other club in Finland.

For those who enjoying a less traditional approach, there are some interesting courses in the north of the country. Green Zone Golf Course  is located on the border between Finland and Sweden  and plays over not only two different countries but two time zones as well. When playing on the 6th hole, your approach to the green will take over an hour! The Arctic Golf Club in the Finnish Lapland region known as ‘Santa’s golf course’ by the locals is another intriguing option.

The green fees in Finland are very reasonable but with the majority of courses built around lakes you might want to spend the money you save on a few extra balls!

The golfing season in Finland runs from May till the beginning of October (depending on the weather in the summer months). The locals tend to play in the evening due to the Midnight Sun phenomenon that Finland enjoys every summer, this means that they can experience up to 20 hours of light during the day! The courses are therefore usually quiet during the mornings allowing for a relaxed round without interruptions.

Away from golf, there are plenty of activities to enjoy. With Finland being dubbed, ‘The Land of the Thousand Lakes’, fishing is extremely popular all year round. The cold climate encourages trout and salmon – which can grow up to 20kg! Whether it be fly-fishing, spinning or trolling in the lakes or fresh sea fishing in the sea, a good time is guaranteed.

During the summer, the big cities, like Helsinki and Tampere, are buzzing with events from performing arts festivals to ice hockey matches, encouraging an influx of tourists and locals alike.

With over 50 airports across Europe flying to Helsinki-Vantaa airport daily, it’s never been easier to get there. Upon arrival, the public transport system is of the highest standard with trains running between all the major cities throughout the day and also overnight. The coach service covers more than 90% of the roads in Finland making it one of the most wide-ranging in Europe.

A golf holiday in Finland is a great option if you’ve worn out the conventional options and fancy something completely different without losing the quality of courses.

    Interesting to play
A highly recommended yet different golf course! I played it last summer and it was an extremely enjoyable experience. Interesting, well maintained and very pleasant staff indeed! Maybe, one of the best golf courses I have ever played in this beautiful country.
