Golf in Bulgaria has flourished over the past few years thanks to its new, original and outstanding courses and resorts. Having hosted the Volvo World Match Play Championship in May of this year, the popularity of golf is expected to soar over the coming decade.
Air Sofia was the first golf course in Bulgaria of real quality, but new designs across the country have taken golf in Bulgaria to a different level. There are three courses near Sofia, three along the coast of the Northern Black Sea, one near Bansko, one in Pravets, and one near Sliven.
About 25 miles from Varna is the region of Cape Kaliakra, which is home to three first-rate golf courses. Both BalckSeaRama golf course and Thracian Cliffs , two undeniably spectacular courses set alongside the coastal cliffs of the Black Sea, were designed by Gary Player. Thracian Cliffs has been christened by many as, ‘Europe’s Pebble Beach’ and it’s not difficult to tell why. The Pro Shop, which is situated next to a really impressive Club House, has a wide range of golf clothing and equipment available – including golf balls; golfers of all levels are encouraged to stock up on plenty!
The third course in the Cape Kaliakra is the Lighthouse Golf Resort , designed by European Golf Design alongside Ian Woosnam. The course is situated in the heart of the town of Balchik, with immense natural treasures and varied wildlife enhancing the enjoyment of golfers.
‘Woosie’ was also the architect of the Pirin Golf & Country club in Bansko. The club is set in a complex that also includes an exclusive spa centre, seven swimming pools, and eight restaurants.
Whilst many Mediterranean golf destinations can become almost too hot at times during the summer months, the temperatures in Bulgaria are much more bearable. With the warm weather continuing all the way through to November, the golf season lasts a long time allowing golfers the opportunity to enjoy the remarkable views and beautiful courses almost all year round.
The climate may enhance the golfing experience but the fact that Bulgaria hasn’t spoilt itself by trying to overdevelop and grow too fast means that golfers can also really enjoy the culture of the country.
There is a lot do away from the golf course at all the resorts. Swimming pools, tennis courts, and spas are just some of the typical facilities available which will make it hard to leave the confines of the resort!
However, there are many tourist attractions to be seen. Varna, the city within touching distance of the courses in the Balchik area, is well worth a visit. The mix of ancient, medieval and modern cultures blended together creates a charming and absorbing atmosphere.
The sheer excellence of the resorts, hotels, and courses combined with the great value for money means that Bulgaria will deliver, without doubt, an unbelievable experience.
Most major airlines across Europe fly to both Sofia and Varna airports and once you arrive many of the golf packages in Bulgaria include airport transfers to your hotel. Having arrived, public transport has improved immeasurably since its introduction to the European Union in 2007. High speed trains and rapid improvements to the entire Bulgarian road network allows for easy and safe travelling across the country.
The term ‘quality not quantity’ comes to mind when talking about golf in Bulgaria. It may be in the early stages with regards to the number of courses available; however the world-class courses available more than make up for it. With various high quality golf packages available for golfers of all abilities, look no further than Bulgaria for your next golf holiday.
