Located in County Waterford in the South East of Ireland is the golf course at Waterford Castle Hotel and Golf Club. This well-appointed complex is set on its own private island within the River Suir and thanks to this blessed location has some amazing views and scenery. It is completely within the river and can only be accessed by a private ferry which runs regularly from the mainland making this a secluded and tranquil destination to enjoy a golfing getaway.

The course was opened in 1992 and was designed by former Ryder Cup player Des Smyth. Set in an ample estate that was once home to the Fitzgerald family for some 800 years the island was sold in the 1950’s and the construction and adaptation of both the castle and its grounds into a luxury hotel and golf resort began in 1990.

Measuring 6230 metres from the medal tees this parkland style course offers a par of 72. Of a championship standard, features here include extensive mature woodland and parkland  through which the course is routed. Carefully crafted and contoured bunkering adds a further challenge and although the complex is surrounded by water, inland water features are commonplace and add even more interest.

The facilities at Waterford Castle are luxurious and the golf club as well as the rest of the resort are well equipped to meet the needs of all those who play and visit here. The club house is home to a welcoming bar and restaurant area as well as a professional golf shop from which players can buy and rent a number of items. Practice facilities here are also excellent and include a nine-hole putting green and driving range complete with a number of covered bays.

As the resort tends to be a go-to location for business getaways and golfing holidays the tee times for visitors to this course are generous. They tend to be focused in the morning and early afternoon however there should be a suitable time for all. Weekend availability is somewhat restricted however and advance booking is highly recommended so as to avoid disappointment. Considering the quality of both the golf course and the facilities here and not forgetting the beautiful location the green fee rates offer exceptional value for money and some discounts are even available too.

Although situated on its own island getting to the resort is relatively straightforward and the nearby Waterford City is only a short distance away, across both river and land! There are numerous attractions in the local area that should appeal to all as well. In terms of accommodation the obvious option for those playing here is the affiliated 4 star Waterford Castle hotel which is found on the island and has a number of accommodation options to suit most tastes.

Visited 30th April 09. From the moment you get on the ferry to cross the River Suir, and then drive up to theclub house car park, you just know that you are going to enjoy this course. The fairwaysare well keptand greens quick and undulating. Some beautful par 3's with water hazards and stunning views out onto the Waterford countryside. The course is mature and verychallengingand many times during tee off, we often were held up by the biggest hares ihave seen, just darting across in front of us, not to mention the Deer meandering around the course. This Golf course is a must if visiting Waterford.
