Description

Warrington Golf Club is located on the southern outskirts of Warrington, Cheshire, England.

Founded in 1903, the club has had a rich history over the past century and continues to thrive to this day with the status of one of the finest heathland golf courses in Cheshire. Situated at the highest point in Warrington, the course offers fine views overlooking the city itself and on the clearer days, it is possible to cast your eyes over Lancashire, Cheshire and the Welsh hills too.

It is not only the views though that make the golf course at Warrington so enjoyable for many golfers. The course measures a generous 5,679 metres from the back tees (par 71 for men) and par 73 for the ladies. Its design and naturally undulating ground, as well as several strategically placed hazards such as bunkers and trees, it definitely offers a demanding test of golf for the majority of golfers, regardless of their handicap.

The elevated tees and greens will also make you think about each shot before you take it. As each hole is truly individual here, it is difficult to adopt a unified strategy, instead the emphasis appears to be on being able to adopt different strategies to cater for the hole. Some require long, hard drives down the quite generous fairways, whereas others require accurate putting from the tees in order to score well. Whatever your handicap, the message here is clear. Those who can be flexible and adapt to the changing conditions of each hole will be rewarded the most.

One disadvantage which affects all courses in the UK at one point or another, and especially those in the North West is the temperamental British weather. However even after the wettest of days, the greens at Warrington are perfectly fit to play, making the course playable 52 weeks of the year. Thanks to the effective drainage system in place, the water runs off the course leaving the greens almost dry, and it still allows for fast and true play.

Green fees are very well priced at Warrington and often are sold in conjunction with deals at the onsite clubhouse and restaurant. They can often be purchased with breakfast included, or lunch for golfers who prefer teeing off later. Tee times can and should be booked in advance too, in order to avoid disappointment on the day.

Conveniently located just to the south of Warrington, the club is very easy to reach by car and public transport. For those travelling by car, the nearest motorway is the M56 and drivers should leave at junction 10 to follow signs for the club and the south of the city. Warrington is also home to two railway stations, Warrington Central and Warrington Bank Quay. Warrington Central is ideal for linking cities such as Liverpool and Manchester and Warrington Bank Quay is situated on the West Coast Mainline, linking Glasgow and London. The nearest airports for overseas visitors are Manchester and Liverpool, both of which are within an hour’s drive from the club.

Course is interesting with a mixture of short and long par 4s. All the par 3s are about the same length. Course was in excellent condition. Great views from the course of Cheshire and Merseyside. Clubhouse renovated and is ecellent. Buggies are available to hire.
