Almost directly West of the city of Sligo in the North West of Ireland is the golf course at Strandhill Golf Club. Lying in the shadow of the imposing Knocknarea, which is a huge limestone mass just south of Sligo bay, the golf course here offers some simply stunning views and scenic is an understatement. Due to its location in a bay in the curve of the outline of the country Strandhill is probably better known for surfing however it is also home to this excellent golf course. Other nearby courses include the those at County Sligo Golf Club.
Originally founded in 1931, the course was at first home to a simple nine-hole layout however in 1939 John McAlister from Dublin was asked to design a new nine-hole layout which was opened a year later. The course as we know it today was opened in 1973 and it was designed in collaboration with the members from the club.
Measuring 5610 metres from the white tees this course has a par of 70 and consists of 18 holes. Of a links style, features here make the most of the natural environment and surroundings. Expect exciting and, at times, severe undulating greens as well as a number of unforgiving holes and fairways. Combine that with the natural elements which help to define links courses and players are in for a challenging yet enjoyable golfing treat.
Facilities at this club are fair and are housed in the clubhouse. There is a bar and restaurant which players can enjoy after their rounds and there are a number of lounge areas also. Tee time availability for visitors to this course are fair and there should be a time to suit all. Weekend tee time availability is restricted however as this is usually for visitors. Green fee rates are very reasonable here and offer good value for money. The club also hosts a number of open competitions and tournaments throughout the year for both member and visitors to enjoy.
With Sligo being less than 10km away from the course, the transport links here are reasonable and much of the rest of the county can be easily accessed, as can Northern Ireland. There are a number of accommodation providers in the local area which have good relations with the club and include everything from hostels to private holiday cottages so there should be something to appeal to all.

The welcome was excellent, and the fairways were as good as we played in County Sligo and Donegal, the greens were only bettered by Murvagh and the fairways were the best we played, and we played all the 'big ones'. Great value for money. We were 6 golfers, all single figure handicap, and we all loved it. A very 'sporty' course indeed. Friendship In Sport
