Slieve Russell Golf Course is part of the larger complex of Slieve Russell Hotel, Golf and Country Club in Ireland. Found in the north of the country in the townland of Cranaghan it is close to the country's border with Northern Ireland. It lies in the county of County Cavan which is also home to the nearby town of Ballyconnell.

The course is of a championship standard and is an excellent example of an Irish parkland course. It was opened for play in 1992 and was designed by Irish designer and architect Patrick “Paddy” Merrigan. Its course and design have received much critical acclaim over the years including high praise from the famous esteemed golfer Christy O’Connor Snr, father of the equally renowned Christy O’Connor Jnr who is also a golf course designer.

Consisting of 18 holes and measuring 5971 metres from the white tees this course has a par of 72. The design of the course is strategic and is a real test of every golfers’ prowess, although at times it can be forgiving. Water hazards and bunkers feature extensively across the course as the estate in which the course lies is home to more than 50 acres worth of lakes. Expect a number of intricate holes with immaculate yet deceptively tricky greens. This course has a host of features that will appeal to players of all styles and strengths.

Facilities at Slieve Russell are extensive and luxurious as the golf club and courses form part of the Slieve Russell resort. The clubhouse itself is connected to the main hotel and houses its own bar and restaurant as well as professional golf shop and changing rooms complete with lockers. Golf specific facilities include a floodlit driving range as well as a chipping and putting green. Golfing tuition is also available at the club by prior arrangement.

Tee times for visitors to this course offer good availability and choice which vary with the seasons. Green fee rates at this course change depending upon the day of the week however all are reasonable and offer excellent value for money considering the quality of both the course and its facilities. There are a number of deals and offers usually available too for visiting players.

Slieve Russell is generally well connected to the rest of Ireland as well as nearby Northern Ireland by road. The nearest international airport is actually found across the border in Northern Ireland and is that of Belfast which is around 2 hours away by car. With regards to accommodation for visiting players, the obvious choice is the associated Slieve Russell Hotel which offers a variety of luxury accommodation solutions and boasts a number of other facilities.

Pleasantly surprised by this gem of a course. We stayed in the hotel and had no intention of making use of the golf course but only for the inviting green fee of 30 euro. We played this course on 17th of November and were expecting the course to be holding some water but the fairways and the course was in great condition. I really enjoyed the 2nd par 3 6th shooting down hill into a green protected by an array of bunkers. Also the 13th par 5 heading out over the lakes is magnificent. I would definitely rate this parkland course very highly.
