Description

Situated in County Donegal in the North West of Ireland the Old Tom Morris Links golf course at Rosapenna is set in a beautiful location along the coastline of Tramore beach which overlooks Sheephaven Bay as well as stretches of stunning sand dunes. There is also another course at Rosapenna which is the Sandy Hills course.

The course itself was first established in 1891 when Old Tom Morris of St. Andrews discovered its potential and is accredited for its initial design.  During the turn of the century it became somewhat of a place of pilgrimage for golfers. Over the years changes have been made to the course by other prominent golfing names including Harry Vardon and James Braid who added more length to the course but knew that it was already of such a high calibre there was little left to do.

More dramatic changes occurred in 2009 when the back nine were replaced, and are now played as the front nine. These holes were laid out by Pat Ruddy and offer excellent views across Mulroy Bay. Although the difference in age of the two halves of the course is vast, the transition between the two is seamless and is a real credit to all involved.

The course is 5718 metres in length and has a par of 70. It incorporates spacious, undulating terrain as well as vast, rolling fairways that are a bit more forgiving compared with the Sandy Hills course. The greens are receptive, quick and in good condition which lends to a less strenuous and calculated game in comparison with its sister course.

Facilities at the course are some of the best, The Golf Pavilion which opened in 2005 represents heavy investment and dedication from the club.  The building is laid out over two storeys and not only encompasses usual features such as changing rooms, lounges, bar, restaurant and golf shop but also billiards, committee and conference rooms. Elements of the British Open venue of Turnberry, Scotland have been channelled into the design here making for a fitting club house.

Tee times at the course are plentiful although it is highly recommended to reserve the times in advance. The same applies to buggies and caddies which are also available at the course. Green fees for both courses are reasonable and similar and if booked online there are sometimes offers available.

In terms of location, the Old Tom Morris Links Course is well connected to both Ireland and Northern Ireland and the nearest airport is that of Derry which is actually in Northern Ireland but is still only approximately an hour and a half drive away. There is an on-site luxury hotel which offers a wide portfolio of rooms, from classics to suites with views of the bay. There are packages available for both golf and non-golfing visitors as there are many leisure and dining option available to all guests which will appeal to both golfers and non-golfers alike.

Play mr Old Tom Morris course is always a great pleasure, genuine, intelligent, has not taken a ride with time. Strategy, placement of the ball, the wind, all clubs out of the bag. Report quality price correct and that she views!

Having just returned from playing both courses at Rosapenna, I would like inform those who have yet to have had the pleasure, this is a must for all Links Fans, we started the weekend by playing the Old Tom Morris Course, which was an excellent course and a good warm up for Sandy Hills which is spectacular, we were lucky to play the course on a clear day so we add the extra bonus to soak up the wonderful scenery that surrounds the course. Back to the course it's self, some of the run offs around the greens are little penial, but add to the very enjoyable roller coaster ride of playing a Pat Ruddy design, there is a great variation of holes and makes it a absolute pleasure to play if your on your game, if your not playing your best you could lose footballs, not golf balls in the dunes that border most holes. Finally a big thank to Frank Casey Jnr and all his staff for making our all our stay a pleasure. Cannot wait to return.

What a great place. It holds its breath at almost every tee, because a great car before one is. Not a single boring hole. Varied, fantastic views in a beautiful landscape. The course is challenging, but never unfair. As always with links courses: the ball nicely on the fairway can be :-)). Of our six (Tom Morris, Portsalon, Portnoo Narin, Ballylifin) played places that clear Nr. 1

In June we were here yesterday and played 14 (!)rounds on both Rosapenna courts and many jobs in the (distant) environment. Stayed at the Coastguard Cottages with magnificent views of the Bay and very attractive greenfee vouchers: 35, unbelievable for such world class courses. And for that you have the job for you only, delicious, though do you not understand how they can exploit the resort here. Could not have lunch in the clubhouse, only in the hotel. About the jobs nothing but good.Sandy Hills: beautifully situated on the high dunes, for its challenging holes, bad afstraffend, but good irrevocably succeed succeed rewarding, an eldorado for serious golfers. Old Tom Morris: especially the second half of the first (new) 9 beautiful holes. Second nine impresses above all by the magnificent view of the high dunes with the Sandy Hills holes. The holes of OTM walk back and forth, at SH are you soon you lose orientation in the high dunes. It's almost the end of the world here, but if you have the chance: go, if only to keep them just like the adjacent 36 holes complex go bankrupt, that would be a disaster!
