Real Club Valderrama
Avda. de los Cortijos, sn, Sotogrande 11310, Cádiz
- architect:Robert Trent Jones Snr.
Real Club Valderrama is one of the country’s most famous golf courses and is located in the area of Sotogrande, Spain. Regarded as one of the best courses in Andalusia, the golf resort has previously hosted prestigious events such as the Ryder Cup, Volvo Masters and the World Golf Championship. The region also basks in the perfect conditions to play golf all year round, so playing at this resort is a must for all golfing enthusiasts.
Since its opening in 1974 the club has been on the forefront of the best courses in the world with backing from billionaire Jaime Ortiz Patiño. Designed by the legendary Robert Trent Jones Sr., the course is a real challenge, featuring layouts never seen before. The immaculate greens are often tiny but lightning fast and inexperienced golfers will be surprised by the difficulty of the putts. Furthermore, the fairways are predominantly narrow and require players to place their golf shots well to ensure a good score. Needless to say, the various tricky bunkers and water hazards must be avoided to ensure a good score - they will test your golf style to the max.
Undoubtedly one of the world’s top golf courses, Real Club Valderrama is:
- A flawless resort which has been tweaked to fulfil the needs of the modern golfer;
- Situated in a prime position close to other famous golf courses such as Finca Cortesin Golf Club;
- Only 22 kilometres from Gibraltar International Airport, and is therefore easily accessible for those visiting from abroad;
- A member’s only club, but visitors are allocated tee times during a 2 hour period in the afternoon;
- Close to the stunning beaches of the Costa del Sol, so golfers can relax and soak in the sun after their round of golf.
Real Club Valderrama is not only famous for its spectacular course, but also for its impressive practice facilities which have received praise from countless numbers of professionals who have visited the course. Golfers can use the practice area to refine their golf swings, or receive golf chipping tips from the resort’s PGA golf pro.
Of course, the history of golf is not complete without this golf club, the place where Tiger Woods made his Ryder Cup debut and where Sergio Garcia won the Andalucian Masters. In fact, many will recognise the resort from its TV coverage of these memorable events.

Larger Than Life10/10/2016this review is the subjective opinion of a GOLFBOO user and not of GOLFBOO S.LWe played Real Club Valderrama on October 5, 2016. Our experience, from parking in the members parking lot with the assistance of staff, to a simply delightful late lunch in the superb grille, was pure bliss. Valderrama strikes you as larger (and sandier) than life. Like all the "renowned" (some deservedly, some not so much) courses in Spain and Portugal, the course is looong (6100 yards for SENIORS, only 6900 from the tips). The course was in pristine conditions, perfectly manicured and flawlessly landscaped. There were in excess of 200 workers busy on the grounds during our round. There is sand abutting nearly every landing area and nearly every green. The traps are huge and deep; the sand is consistently excellent. The greens are fast, but not excessively so, and they run true. They are, however, almost all contoured and the pin positions on some were sadistic. With a few exceptions, the landing areas are generous, but as noted above, well-trapped if you stray too wide. And there's the rub. On an early hole, you could smoke it down the left side of the fairway, ten yards off center and have an impossible shot to the green because you are coming in from the "wrong angle". If you chance the right side of the fairway, you risk the sand if you stray off the fairway by a few feet. The par threes are excellent. Each is challenging and requires precision. My only double bogey of the round came on a par three where I was a yard short. The design philosophy seems to be to force you to play your second shot long and putt downhill and downgrain. On greens running 9 or 10, that's doable. On Valderamma's greens running at 11-12, it is very difficult. Anticipate three putt greens. If I seem to be suggesting that Valderrama is a very difficult golf course, its only because I am. But it is fair – you can see (or anticipate) the trouble and you have conservative but safe options. You get into trouble when you try to score by forcing shots. And despite its difficulty, the course is IMHO a great golf course and a great golfing experience. One of my favorite one liners on new golf courses on distant shores is "I didn't come all the way from Michigan to lay up". At Valderrama, I should have and after four holes, I did. Valderrama is a great golf course because its tests every aspect of your game and challenges your ability to think on the golf course. We had a truly great golfing experience. One of the golf courses that deserve to be on any serious golfer's bucket list - and I haven't even talked about the great pro shop, practice facilities and staff.

Everybody had a fantastic experience06/10/2016this review is the subjective opinion of a GOLFBOO user and not of GOLFBOO S.LWe were a group of 8 players and everybody had a fantastic experience. It started with being met in the car park with someone collecting our clubs. The check-in process was very good. Using your driving range was easy and convenient. The starter was very polite and knowledgeable. We used a caddy who was fantastic. His course knowledge, especially on the greens, was first class and he was a lovely man to have accompany us. The club house and course are very beautiful and very well maintained. Because we were playing a UK v USA competition we were slower than normal. Your staff wre very polite when requesting we allow later groups to play through. I do not have anything negative to say. Thank you for hosting us.
