Found in the Irish midlands within the little known county of Laois is the Rathdowney Golf Club and its associated golf course. Slightly to the south of the town of Rathdowney itself, the local area is home to a number of places of interest, mainly of an ecclesiastical nature. The town has also been referred to in a number of literary works over the years and is the birthplace of many notable people including two recipients of the military Victoria Cross.

The club here was the brainchild of a local friar and was originally founded in 1930. With a history spanning decades it is safe to say that the club here has experienced most of the changes relating to the sport in recent years. The course as we know it today was designed by the late, Irish favourite  Eddie Hackett who is perhaps best known for his work on the courses at  Connemara

Made up of 18 holes the course is of a traditional parkland style. Measuring 5926 metres from the white tees and with a par of 71 the course is a fair challenge for many. Features include pleasantly undulating terrain and mature greens which are well manicured. Overall, the course can be enjoyed players of varying styles and strengths and should be enjoyed by most.

Facilities at the club are modest yet fair and there is both a bar and restaurant offering a selection of refreshments for all to enjoy. Tee time availability is generally good here for visitors and there should be a time to suit all. Green fee rates are reasonable and vary very little with the seasons making this a good constant choice for regular players. The club also hosts a weekly open competition that can be enjoyed by members and visitors alike.

Thanks to its location in central  Ireland, access to the club is relatively good as it lies near to the main through route between  Cork and  Dublin. Accommodation options in and around the area are moderate and there is fair variety for all.
