Found in the western half of central Ireland is the golf course at Portumna Golf Club. The course here lies in County Galway but is very close to the border that the county shares with County Tipperary. The small town of Portumna is located nearby and the local area is very popular with anglers as well as golfers thanks to the unique joining point of the River Shannon into the nearby Lough Derg.

The club was founded in 1913 and recently celebrated its centenary. Originally just a basic nine hole format the course here was extended to the full 18 holes in 1992 and since then has matured well in to a great course.

Measuring 5825 metres from the yellow tees this course has a par of 72. It is of a traditional parkland style and is laid out in two loops of nine. Expect a great array of features from this course including lots of mature trees and gently undulating terrain as standard. The 17th hole deserves a special mention as this is cited by many as the hardest of the lot thanks to a blind tee shot and the presence of water. This course provides a good challenge which should test even some of the most experienced of players.

Facilities at this club are fair and the club is proud to boast the excellent “Fairways Restaurant” which serves a variety of traditional food and drink for players to enjoy after their rounds. It can be found in the clubhouse next to bar which players here can also enjoy.

Tee time availability for visitors to this course is generally good and visitors should have no problem finding a suitable time. Weekend availability is restricted however and it is advised to book for the week if you are a visiting player. Green fee rates here are very reasonable and represent good value for money. It should be noted that both tee time availability and green fee rates change with the season.

The club is relatively well connected by road to much of western and central Ireland and is around an hour away from Galway city which lies to the Northwest of the site and onward transport links from there are plentiful. The city of Limerick is also around an hour away, but to the Southwest and onward links from there are also good. There are a number of accommodation options in and around the local area which should suit the tastes and budgets of most visitors.
