At the tip of the Fanad Peninsula you will find the Portsalon Golf Club and its associated golf course. This secluded and visually pleasing location in the North West of Ireland in County Donegal makes for a fantastic place to enjoy a round or two on this stunning links style course. Overlooking the nearby Ballymastocker Bay and with views of Lough Swilly this course and its views are truly breath-taking.

The course was originally opened for play in 1891 and was created by Thompson of Portrush however over the years numerous changes and adaptations took place. These changes were finalised officially under the trained and watchful eye of the infamous Pat Ruddy in 2000 and since then the course has remained relatively unchanged.

Consisting of 18 holes and measuring 5205 metres from the yellow tees, this traditional links course has a par of 72. Weaving intricately through the sand dunes of the peninsula this course is challenging as it is beautiful. Expect well protected greens counterbalanced by tighter, trickier fairways which are a real test for golfers. The natural elements that define links courses don’t disappoint here either, for some times the wind can be your greatest ally but at others your biggest foe. This really is a test for even the most accomplished of golfers but it is sure to be an enjoyable one thanks in part to its excellent location.

The facilities at Portsalon are unpretentious yet meet the needs of most. There is a bar and restaurant located on site which offer an array of refreshments to perk up players after a long round out on the windy links. Trolleys and buggies are also available to hire here for a charge and should be booked in advance so as to avoid disappointment as there is limited availability.

Tee times for visitors to this course have generally good availability and the green fee rates are very reasonable too. A number of discounts and offers are also available throughout the year and the club has an array of membership options for those wishing to make this course a permanent addition to their golfing life. A prolific option is that of lifetime overseas membership which offers excellent value for money.

Travelling to Portsalon is relatively straightforward if a little time consuming. The nearest airport is that of Derry which is around an hour away by car. In terms of accommodation the club has a number of established links with nearby providers which include everything from holiday cottages to larger hotels. There should be something to suit everyone in the local area however a car is a must have to get to nearby locations.

Really a very nice links of pure tradition, narrow fairways, undulating, wind, beautiful views of the sea, a few holes challenging, but fun! Good value for money

(Round played: Jun 2015 - Score: 117 Handicap: ) the course was in great shape but could do with a half way hut in the summer.

Played Portsalon last week and we were bowled over by it. The wind was blowing hard and we lost a lot of balls ending up way over handicap but we didn't care! The scenery is stunning, the 2nd hole is one of the most picturesque I've ever played. The course is in lovely condition and has some terrific holes. Exhilarating experience and well worth the effort to go and play it. Link it in with the other fine courses in the area such as Rosapenna and you'll be in golf heaven!

Detour is worthwhile in any case! A place in a spectacular location with great views. Very varied! Nice people and "civilian" Clubhouse. We enjoyed the trip and the game!
