Found near the border between County Offaly and County Laois in Central Ireland is the golf course at Portarlington Golf Club. The course itself borders the nearby River Barrow and some excellent views can be seen by players here of the surrounding Irish countryside which is surprisingly flat. Lying just south of the town of Portarlington itself the surrounding local area has a number of places of interest for visitors to enjoy such as the nearby ruins of the great Lea Castle which dates back to Norman times.

The club here recently celebrated its centenary and was founded back in 1908. The designer of the current course is undocumented however it is clear to see that a number of skilled hands have worked on this great course since its opening.

Laid out in two returning loops of 9, this 18 hole course is of a parkland style and measures 5535 metres from the yellow tees with a par of 71. Although the course is relatively flat it is far from boring and there are a whole load of features here to keep players entertained. This is quite a tight course and tree-lined fairways are commonplace here which add to the enjoyable challenge that this course represents.

Facilities here are generous and include modern and spacious locker rooms which are housed in the clubhouse. Also there is a bar and restaurant area here which players can enjoy after their rounds and all are sure to receive a warm Irish welcome. There is also a well-appointed professional golf shop here from which players can buy an array of equipment, merchandise and apparel.

With regards to tee times, availability for visitors is somewhat restricted to only a couple of days per week and said days change depending upon the season. So as to avoid disappointment it is advised that visitors enquire and book early. There is a strong member presence here and these obviously have priority although visitors are warmly welcomed. Green fee rates are very reasonable and reflect the standard of the course and facilities. A number of discounts and offers are also available for play here which offer even better value for money.

Thanks to its central location getting to the club is relatively straightforward and links to much of the rest of Ireland are good. There are also a number of accommodation options in and around the local area which should appeal to most tastes and budgets.
