As the name suggests the North West Golf Club can be found in some of the extreme northwest of mainland Ireland. Lying in County Donegal the club and its golf course are situated near to the town of Buncrana which lies near to the serene Lough Swilly. Buncrana is one of the most heavily populated towns within the county meaning that amenities here for visitors are very good and the town itself lies very near to the border that Ireland shares with Northern Ireland.

The history of this club dates back to 1891 and it was one of the founding members of the Golfing Union of Ireland. The original course here was laid out by the little known designer J. Thompson however that should not detract from its greatness.

Of a links style, the 18 holes here are laid out on some relatively flat land which is somewhat unusual. Measuring just over 5790 metres the course has a fair par of 70 of which there are two par 5’s. Features of the course include a number of tricky dog legs which will require accurate ironwork as well as crisscrossed fairways which pay homage to the maturity and age of this course and further add to the traditional feel. This is a tricky course which is very distinctive and will be a tough but enjoyable challenge for even the most experienced of golfers.

Facilities at this club are fair and players should find all of the basic amenities that they could need. Tee time availability for visitors here is generally good and there should be a time to suit most especially if people are willing to avoid peak times. Green fee rates are also reasonable for play here and show good value for money.

Getting to the club from much of the north of Ireland as well as nearby Northern Ireland is relatively straightforward, if a little time consuming. The nearest major transport hub for visitors from further afield is that of Londonderry (or Derry as it is sometimes referred to) which actually lies across the order in the United Kingdom. Accommodation options in and around the local area are fair and there should be something to suit all tastes and budgets.

Course in excellent condition including greens, fairways and tee boxes. A biting wind on the first 4/5 holes doesn't help the round get off to great start but when the wind died down it showed the beauty of the classic links course.(Round played: Mar 2016 - Score: 93 Handicap: 21.7)
