Description

Towards the west of Ireland in the famous county of Limerick is the golf course at the Newcastle West Golf Club. As its name suggests the club lies close to the town of Newcastle West, or Newcastle as it is known to locals (not to be confused with the number of Newcastle’s that lie in the nearby United Kingdom e.g. Newcastle Under Lyme and Newcastle Upon Tyne as well as the Newcastle in Northern Ireland!) and amenities and attractions in and around the local area for visitors are good and plentiful.

The club was founded in 1938 and over the years has seen many changes and challenges which have made it the club it is today. Originally consisting of 9 holes, the course was relocated to its current home in 1992 where it was developed in to an 18 hole course of championship standard. Noted designers that have worked on the course over the years include the renowned Dr Arthur Spring and Patrick Merrigan.

Made up of 18 holes the course here is of a parkland style which measures 5410 metres from the yellow tees with a par of 71. The course is home to USGA standard greens and its good drainage means that it can be played on all year round. Water hazards, intelligent bunkering and mature trees combine to create this interesting and unique course which has something for all types of golfer.

Facilities here are generally good and there should be everything here that a modern golfer will need to enjoy their experience. There is a bar and restaurant for players to enjoy after their rounds from which they can get a great array of refreshments. There is also a well-appointed golf shop selling an array of equipment and apparel. The resident professional is also on hand to offer help and advice on purchases as well as coaching and tuition by prior arrangement. Practice facilities are also good at the club and include a seven bay driving range and chipping green upon which players can hone their skills.

Green fee rates for visitors here are very good value for money and there are a number of discounts and offers available for play at certain times here. Tee time availability for visitors here is very good and there will be a time to suit all if they are willing to avoid peak times, particularly at weekends.

The club is found in one of the quieter spots of Ireland however access here by road is generally good from much of the west or Ireland as well as the central region. The major city of Limerick is around 40 km to the north of the site and onward links from there are good. There are fair accommodation options in and around the local area which should appeal to most tastes and budgets.

What a course, very well mantained. The day we played was sunny and warm, greens were excellent, bunkers could do with raking but then again there were over 80 golfers out before we played, can't wait to play it again (Round played: Sep 2014 - Score: 89 Handicap: 21.4)
