This golf course is found in the bright rural terrain of the Eastern Algarve of Portugal and is part of the Monte Rei Golf and Country Club. Lying between the imposing Serra do Caldeirão Mountains and the Atlantic Ocean the course is blessed with a visually stunning location. Combine this with the fact that it is rated as the Number 1 golf course in Portugal and you are truly destined for an unforgettable round of golf.
The North course is one of only a handful of Jack Nicklaus Signature courses in Europe and was the first in Portugal. It was opened for play in June 2007 and its 18 holes stretch over 6567 metres with a par of 72. A second Jack Nicklaus Signature course at the Monte Rei Resort is currently in the late planning stages.
Water is incorporated extensively across the course and this adds to the already unique layout they have created here. With a slope of 136/125, the holes transition seamlessly throughout the course. Expect fresh and innovative shaping of the fairways and greens as well as selection of remarkable bunkers to really highlight each individual golfers’ skill.
The course transitions and compliments well the surrounding natural environment of a number of tranquil lakes and native Portuguese grasses and plants which really heighten the sense of serenity and help to create memories that all visiting golfers can cherish forever.
Many visitors comment on the facilities provided at the course, particularly their exceptional standard. Staff go above and beyond their call of duty to provide all visitors with an unforgettable experience. The club house boasts all expected facilities such as restaurants and bars however it is the extras such as valet parking on arrival which really make this course stand out. Furthermore there is a golf academy on site and a well-appointed, if a little conserved, Pro Golf shop.
As a result of the high service standards green fees for the course can be considered as a little steep however it is clear that you are not only paying to play on a world class golf course but also for impeccable service and extras which will make for an extra special golfing experience.
Tee times at Monte Rei further reflect the high quality experience as the intervals between times are slightly longer than most similar courses so as to allow golfers to really make the most of their round and enjoy the relaxed feeling which this policy creates.
Although the resort is peaceful and set in the beautiful Portuguese countryside it remains easily accessible both from other parts of Portugal as well as from international destinations as Faro and the international airport is merely a 50 minute drive away. Transport links from Spain by car are also strong as the resort is located relatively close to the border.
As the course is situated within the Monte Rei resort there is an abundance of onsite accommodation for prospective visitors to choose from which is mainly in the form of luxury villas which have been built to form a small village complete with restaurants, bars and swimming pools which is ideal for soaking up the Portuguese sun which is prominent at the course, particularly during the summer months

Fantastic!04/02/2014this review is the subjective opinion of a GOLFBOO user and not of GOLFBOO S.LThis course is considered one of the best courses in the world and based on my trip there, I completely understand why! The course is incredible! We paid the full 190 euros, but by teeing off before 9.30, we got a complimentary lunch. Seven courses which were all fantastic! The greens were in a pretty good condition, but they were a bit wet as we were the first group out. I’d highly recommend the venue as the scenery is nothing like anywhere else!
