In the South of Ireland to the West of the city of Cork is where you will find the golf course at Lee Valley Golf and Country Club. Just outside of the small village of Ovens in County Cork the golf course lies in the province of Munster. Its valley setting allows for excellent views and vistas to be had by all that play here with the ones from the first tee being cited as the best.
Designed by golfing legend and Irish favourite Christy O’Connor Jnr the course was opened for play in 1993 by himself and the former US Masters Champion Fred Couples. The course here has played host to a number of events and competitions, most recently that of the Inter Pro Championships in 2013. It also regularly features on a number of lists of Ireland’s best golf courses which further cements its stance as a quality course.
The course is very unique in its style and takes elements from parkland and links style courses. Its 18 holes measure just under 6220 metres and have a par of 72. Expect a great challenge from this course with water and bunkers combining to create some excellent challenges. Raised tees and beautifully undulating greens also add to the excitement and challenge of this course. Furthermore due to the valley location of the course the natural elements, particularly the wind, can play a huge factor in the success (or failure) of your play here.
Facilities at Lee Valley are good and include a bar and restaurant in which players are sure to receive a warm, Irish welcome as well as some excellent food and drink. There is also a professional golf shop at the club which stocks a wide array of equipment and apparel from around the world. Furthermore, there are installations at the club for visitors to enjoy additional activities such as fishing.
Tee times for visitors to this course are fair and change somewhat with the seasons. Green fee rates here remain undisclosed as this is a popular destination for play and stay golfing experiences however these offer fair value for money.
Thanks to its proximity to the city of Cork getting to the club and course is relatively easy from much of the south of Ireland and nearby Cork airport has a number of flights to other destinations. With regards to accommodation the Golf and Country Club has a number of holiday homes on site which can be rented out for visitors to enjoy. There are also further options within Cork itself which should appeal to most tastes and budgets.
