La Reserva De Sotogrande is one of the most famous golf courses located in the region of  Andalusia in southern Spain. The golf resort is found on the renowned  Costa del Sol with over 70 golf courses concentrated on the coast.

It is a unique, beautiful setting with spectacular sea and mountain views that all started with the realization of Joseph McMicking's dream in the 1960's.

He recognized the potential of this location with its views, vast terrain, beach, climate and proximity to the airports.

The result was La Reserva, an 18-hole course, and Almenara with one 18-hole and a 9-hole course.

Almenara golf course is a pay & play course designed by Dave Thomas and is suited for mid to high handicappers that are looking for a top-class course.

La Reserva De Sotogrande is designed by Cabell B. Robinson, the famous American architect with some of the best designs in the world. The course is one of the region's top golf courses and comprises of:

  • 18 challenging holes
  • A par of 72
  • A length of 6,048 metres from yellow tees.

The course opened for play in 2004 and is the perfect location for hosting national and international events.

Its position within two valleys is full of ecological diversity and magnificent aesthetics that put La Reserva De Sotogrande in a class of its own.

While the greens are large, they are quite the challenge with their putting surface that is often undulated in tricky positions. It is certainly recommended to get some putting tips before you head out for your round!

The club golf has grown to become one of the most prestigious clubs in Spain and is joined by its neighbors Valderrama and San Roque as the best golf clubs in Spain.

The clubhouse is a spacious building built in 2004 and with an area of 6,000 square meters in an Andalusian style.

It includes all the services that the modern golfer requires such as five multifunctional halls with bar, dining rooms, meeting rooms, a TV room and a gym.

The golf pro shop provides the finest selection of apparel and accessories designed by well-known brands like Cobra Golf.

Outside the clubhouse there is a driving range accompanied by a putting green and an approach area with the same quality as the real course. This area allows players to learn some useful golfing tips before they tackle the course!

The golf academy of La Reserva welcomes all visitors and offers the opportunity to play with highly qualified teachers in a learning environment.

There are plush villas that are located just above the golf course offering you a truly splendid view over it. There is a high quality service infrastructure with them that can satisfy all your desires.

    Bucket List Material

We played La Reserva on a beautiful day in early October, 2016. The course is a parkland course and is looong! Length is not the course's defense, however. Elevation change is. Nearly every tee shot is from an elevated tee and the majority of shots to the green are from below the green and semi-blind. Neither a TomTom nor a Garmon GPS watch worked - we simply got wildly incorrect distances from both. While the buggy had a fully equipped GPS system with all the bells and whistles including distance in yards available, that system is no help from 75 yards in because the buggy cannot go there. As Yankees, adjusting from meters to yards, adjusting for elevation change and adjusting for the (fairly benign) wind is just enough adjusting to put a hitch in your swing and a doubt in your mind. Generally, however, La Reserva is a free swinging venue. The landing areas are huge from both the black (7,000 plus) and blue (6,000 plus) tees with very few exceptions. There are no drastic forced carries. You really can whale away off the tee and you had better unless you like hitting fairway woods into elevated, undulating greens. The green complexes are a delight. Lotsa sand and lots of undulations, but in pristine condition and rolling true. Downgrain and downhill makes you hold your breath but if you play from beneath the hole you can score. The par 3s are gems. Plateaus and tucked pins abound and more precision is required, but the pars 3s are "fun" holes. The practice facilities are more than adequate. The staff is professional and polite. The restaurant is 4.5 stars and relatively moderately priced. La Reserva is simply a thoroughly enjoyable golf course. One might criticize the course for not being challenging "enough" and that is, perhaps, a valid critique. But if, like me, you enjoy a truly picturesque, manicured golf course where you can swing away and still score, La Reserva is for you. For the TRULY serious golfer, the venue might be a bit too "toney". But it remains great fun, and a great golfing experience.
