As the name suggests The Island Golf Club and its associated golf course are located on an island that until as recently as 1973 was only totally accessible by boat. The Island is in a secluded spot near the east coast of Ireland and is bordered by the Irish Sea, Broadmeadow Estuary and Donabate Beach which creates a secluded, cocooned setting in which to enjoy a round of golf.

The course was opened in 1890 and was one of the first golf clubs to be opened in Ireland. Its foundations are linked to a group of 10 Irishmen known generally as “The Syndicate” who controlled and ran the club until the early 1950’s. The designer and architect of the original course is unknown however in more recent years the course has been reinvigorated by architects Eddie Hackett, Fred Hawtree and Jeff Howes.

This links course offers a no frills, back-to-basics experience which many find refreshing. The 18 holes offer a par of 71 and cover a length of 5960 metres. At times this course can be challenging thanks, in part, to some tough greens featuring numerous undulations. The challenge is further heightened by the prominent winds and temperamental weather conditions experienced at the course. However it is generally enjoyable.

Although isolated, this course boasts all facilities which are found at similar larger courses such as practice facilities, Pro-shop and bar and restaurant. Caddy service and golf buggies are also available however availability is limited so it is strongly recommended to book in advance, particularly for play during the busier seasons.

Tee times for the course are widely available throughout the day but vary somewhat with the seasons and demand. Green fees at the Island are very reasonable for such a high quality course and there are usually numerous offers and discounts available for players depending upon their circumstances including a special “late rate” booking for those who book within 14 days of the date of play.

Getting to the Island course is relatively straightforward; although it is rather secluded it remains close to a number of larger towns and cities and is merely a 15 minute drive away from Dublin International airport which has links to numerous countries. With regards to accommodation the nearby town of Donabate has a number of options for visiting players. But for those who prefer a livelier atmosphere for accommodation the capital Dublin is approximately 20 km southwest of the area and has an abundance of accommodation, sights and attractions to suit all budgets and tastes.

Fantastische ja fast skurrile Mondlandschaft aus Dünen: grossartiges Links-Golfgelände. Vom Besten. Corballis nebenan ist noch günstiger.Hat Driving Range. Teils schwierige Löcher. Gerade sein ist viel wichtiger als Länge.

6 handicap golfer - played April 2013 Really enjoyed the Island. As with most courses, especially some links courses, if there is inland holes, these tend to be the weaker holes. In The Island' case it was the 8th and 9th. However these were decent holes. The other 16 are magnificent. I am confused why this course is not ranked higher. It really is a very good track and one that I could play time and time again
