    Daylight Robbery

I was unfortunate enough to have used the on line facility to book two green fees for my wife and I on friday the 9th September timed at 1320. We had travelled up from Cornwall that day to attend a wedding on the Saturday and thought a pleasant round of golf at Hamptworth would fill the afternoon nicely. How wrong can you be. We booked in in good time with the pro shop, and paid what we thought was a reasonable fee of £50, and made our way to the first tee at the allocated time. We teed off and on seeing the green noticed a four ball putting out. We waited until the green had cleared and then completed the hole. On reaching the second tee we had to wait because the group in front were still in range we did so and once again waited on the fairway whilst the green cleared. It was already apparent that some of the group in front were not even reasonably proficient golfers. And so it went on. On occasions we caught them on the tee only to be told that they were waiting for the group in front and couldnt let us through. We were also told they were part of a large group on a company day out, and it was apparent that the four ball in front of them were also of similar standard. We watched them as they mis hit balls, lost balls left and right, searched for "lost cause" balls, and on one occasion even returning to the tee to tee off for a second time. They had no idea of any of the etiquette of golf, little idea of the rules, and were in no particular hurry, etc etc etc. We thought of playing the front nine again but the 1st tee was busy when we got to it, so persisted with our round. In all our round took 5 hours 10 minutes, my wifes longest round ever, and in my experience only matched once abroad and once on a championship course in Cornwall which is around 1000 yards longer, and I was playing a four ball event. On completion my wife ( I was beyond reason at this point) attempted to make an official complaint in the clubhouse to find the pro shop locked up, and no one on reception. We left without having the intended drink and/or bite to eat. I fully understand that golf clubs have a need to embrace the masses and that corporate events are money spinners. However many clubs still insist on handicap certificates or at the very least oversee such competitions to see that they do not interfere with their members or visitors enjoyment. To take a green fee from us ( and from others as we were talking on the tee to other green fees who had caught us by the latter stage of the round), without any warning as to what we would encounter ,and without any attempt to delay our tee off, or perhaps send us off the 10th , was nothing short of daylight robbery!! Simply disgraceful. I am fortunate enough to belong to a club where this would not happen as whilst they welcome corporate events every effort is made to accommodate all on the course. members and green fees alike. The club were given the opportunity to respond as I complained by e mail but failed to respond. Says it all.. In all other respects we found the course whilst short, in excellent condition, with true greens, and a fair test of golf. Chris Beer

A tough course in good condition but greens had been recently tined which made them a little tricky. The beast was something different. The clubhouse was friendly

Just visited the course for the first time and have to say that I am very impressed. A fantastic enjoyable experience – the greens condition and the overall layout of the course is excellent. The onsite restaurant and clubhouse are definitely worth checking out - lots of choice and very reasonably priced. I live in Southampton (Hampshire) and, despite the course being in Wiltshire, it only took 20 minutes to get to the club. Very friendly and helpful staff that were more than happy to show me around as it was my first visit. I will no doubt be returning soon!
