Close to the border that Ireland shares with Northern Ireland is where you will find the golf course at Dundalk Golf Club. On the Irish side of the border near to the scenic Dundalk Bay, this course offers some spectacular views over the nearby Cooley Mountains. Its north eastern location is almost directly North of Dublin and the capital itself is less than an hour’s drive away from the course.

Dundalk Golf Club was founded back in 1905 and has seen many famous designers and architects make their mark. Examples of some of the renowned include James Braid, whose works are seen more prominently across the water in Scotland, who carried out modifications in 1934 and more recently Eddie Connaughton who re-laid a number of the greens.

A fine example of a parkland style that has matured beautifully over the years this is a par 72 course which measures 6025 metres from the white tees. Across the 18 holes there are a number of interesting features including elevated greens and tees, extensive use of water and a good presence of trees which all combine to create an enjoyable course with a fair amount of challenge.

The club is well-equipped to meet the needs of visitors and the facilities here are excellent. There is a well-stocked professional golf shop housed in the clubhouse as well as a welcoming bar and restaurant which players can enjoy after their rounds. There are also lockers, changing and shower facilities for all players to use. Practice facilities here are good and include a putting green as well as pitching, chipping and bunker areas.

Tee time availability for visitors to this course tends to be best during weekdays as at weekends the course is reserved for play by members. Green fee rates here are reasonable when you consider the quality of both the course and facilities here. The club also hosts a number of open competitions across the course of the year which can be enjoyed by all.

Getting to the resort from much of Ireland as well as Northern Ireland is straightforward as it is located near to one of the major road routes between the two capitals. With regards to accommodation there are a number of options in and around the local area which should appeal to most tastes and budgets.

I played Dundalk on the weekend past and it was the usual pleasant experience. As golfing experiences go, it's perhaps not the most exciting; there is a consistency in fairway widths, elevation changes and shapes that is comforting rather than pulse raising. Yet this is part of course's appeal. Its challenge gets you moving along at a friendly pace and the positioning of greens, fairways and trees keeps you thinking about how best to score rather than how not to muck up. Some very nice holes. The 2nd is a medium length par 4 that teases poor shots out of you. The par 5 7th provides a great approach over water. 15-18 is a strong finish. Then there are some oddities too - the 8th is one of those bizarre holes with a blind approach shot, and the 9th is a par 3 with a tree in front of the green. Not my cup of tea. But all in all, a pleasant and friendly course, one that won't disappoint you - if maybe not worth its summer green fee.
