Description

  • holes:18
  • par: 68 70
  • length: 5.232 m 4.927 m
  • architect:Harry Vardon & Patrick Merrigan

Set in some of the finest Irish countryside is the golf course at Delgany Golf Club. Found near to the village of the same name the golf club is in County Wicklow towards the east of the country. The stunning Wicklow Mountains National Park lies to the West of the site and a number of other popular golf courses can be found nearby including those at Greystones and Charlesland

The club was founded in 1908 and celebrated its centenary in 2008 which shows that this course and club really have stood the test of time. The original course was designed by Harry Vardon however it was the tough job of Patrick Merrigan to redevelop and modify the course so as to meet the USGA standards without losing the classic charm and nature of the course. It is clear to see that Merrigan succeeded in this endeavour and the course today remains a beautiful one.

Its 18 holes are of a mixed parkland and woodland nature which makes for interesting and scenic play. The course measures 5473 metres from the white tees and has a par of 69. Expect gentle undulations scattered throughout the course and only a few bunkers to contend with. Many would see this as a relatively easy course however it still has its fair share of challenges and bunkers are cleverly placed;add to this a number of tricky dog legs and raised greens and the obstacles begin to add up. That said this is a generally pleasant course with just the perfect amount of a challenge for golfers of all strengths.

The club prides itself on its facilities and the warm welcome that it offers to both members and visitors. There is a bar and restaurant in the clubhouse as well as a number of rooms which can be hired out for meetings and functions. A professional golf shop onsite can provide players with an array of merchandise and equipment to purchase. There are modern changing and locker facilities here too and there is also a snooker room which can be enjoyed by players after their rounds.

Tee times for visitors to this course are restricted and available slots get filled quickly, it is therefore highly recommended to book well in advance to avoid disappointment. There are a number of open competitions held at the club throughout the year which allows both members and visitors to play alongside each other. Green fee rates here offer good value for money especially considering the high quality of both the course and the facilities and not forgetting the lovely location.

Travelling to the club is relatively straightforward and there are a number of transport routes in the area connecting it to the metropolitan hub and capital that is Dublin and from there links to the rest of the world are good and well established. Accommodation options in the local area are limited however there is a number of hotels which can provide visitors with a comfortable place to stay.
