Found on one of the most North Westerly tips of Ireland is the golf course at Cruit Island Golf Club. As the name suggests the course is set on a small island which is connected to the mainland by a number of bridges. This unspoilt stretch of coastline is truly stunning and makes for a breath-taking location in which to play golf. Its location in the extremes of County Donegal provides a peaceful and serene setting which, for some, adds to its appeal.

The course here was opened for play in 1986 and was created by professional Michael Doherty. Cited by many as a true hidden gem on the Emerald Isle, this courses windswept beauty and terrain not only add to the aesthetics in terms of looks but also in terms of play and nature has provided an excellent canvas for designers here.

Consisting of 9-holes this is a perfect example of an Irish links course, with a par of 34 and measuring just shy of 2570 metres. The natural beauty and surroundings here shine through in terms of design and the cliff top nature of some of the holes create some great challenges. This is a classic yet raw course that really lets nature do the talking and can be a real test for even the most accomplished of players.

Facilities at Cruit Island are minimal but are reasonable and they should be adequate for most players visiting here. Green fee rates for this course are very reasonable considering its beauty and challenge and this is a great option for a day out. Although membership here is prominent tee times for visitors are also fair and there should be a time to suit all.

Getting to the course can be difficult for some due to its secluded nature and it is somewhat off the beaten track. However there are fair road links to the surrounding area from both the rest of Ireland and Northern Ireland as the course is relatively close to the border between the two. Donegal Airport is also close and has a number of domestic flights throughout the week as well as a number to Scotland. There are a number of accommodation option in the local area and these tend to be a popular choice as it is easier for visitors here to stay overnight due to its isolated nature.

If you this course, because it's over, only 9 holes you missed out on the opportunity to play in a special place. It is by the sea, but not really a links, as it is situated on the cliffsover the water. You need to make an effort, to get there, because it's not on the way to somewhere.
