In the far South of Ireland near to the city of Cork within County Cork is the golf course at Cork Golf Club. Often cited as one of the most picturesque golf courses in the country it can be found on the tiny peninsula of Little Island in one of the estuaries of the River Lee. Offering some fantastic views over the nearby Cork Harbour the course and club here lie next to the Harbour Point Golf Club and its course.

The club was originally founded in 1888 but did not move to its present home until 1897. The first nine-hole layout was done so by Tom Dunne from Bournemouth just a year later in 1898. However it was in 1927 that the course was extended and modified by the legendary Alister MacKenzie and since then it has seen little in the way of major changes which is credit to its excellent design.

This 18 hole parkland style course has a par of 72 and measures 5956 metres from the white tees. Features here include large undulating terrain and fast greens as well as the presence of a significant amount of water. The designers have made the most of the natural features here and have managed to create an excellent fusion which is both challenging and enjoyable and will appeal to most players.

Most of the facilities at the club are housed in the clubhouse which was renovated beautifully in 2002. Here you will find an excellent bar and restaurant area offering a wide array of delicious food and beverages for players to enjoy. There are also well-equipped locker facilities for both members and visitors to enjoy. There is also a good professional golf shop and a number of practice facilities at the disposal of players.

Tee times for visitors here tend to have the best availability on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays as the course is used by members and for open competitions on the other days of the week, however these are subject to change. Green fee rates at first glance here seem steep however, when you consider the quality of the course and the facilities here it is reasonable and a number of offers and discounts are usually available.

Transport links to the club are good and access from much of the South of Ireland is good. With regards to accommodation options there are a number of providers in and around the local area and in the city of Cork itself there are plenty which will appeal to all tastes and budgets.

After playing Old Head, one must add this course to your itinerary. Some really great, kinky holes, the 6th being a gem of only 270 meters. Designed by Alistair Mackenzie of Augusta fame, this course is worth the excursion!
