Only 8 km outside of the metropolitan hub of Dublin, Ireland; the Castle Golf Club and its golf course are situated perfectly to host visitors from a variety of national and international locations. Lying between the two residential suburbs of Rathfarnham and Churchtown the club and course boast the excellent local amenities of the city whilst still providing a beautiful parkland course on which to play golf.

Opened in 1913, the club recently celebrated its centenary. It was designed and laid originally by the trio of Cecil Barcroft, W.C. Pickeman and local professional Tom Hood. Some years later in 1918 the famous Harry S. Colt reviewed the course and made some changes to the original design. The course remained generally unchanged until 2000 when it underwent serious changes and updates to bring the course to USGA standards.

Measuring just over 5745 metres from the back tees, this 18-hole course has a par of 70. Bunkers feature heavily in the design which comprises of two loops of nine in terms of layout. Beautifully maintained greens and fairways make it an excellent and enjoyable course to play on and is an undiscovered inland gem for many players visiting the course for the first time.

The club boasts a wide selection of facilities for all golfers including a full restaurant and bar as well as a well-appointed golf shop. In addition to this there is a small, six-hole practice facility and tuition is available from the club professional David Kinsella. There are also installations in the club house for bridge and snooker clubs.

Tee times at the club for visitors are quite restricted as it tends to be for members only however throughout the year it does host a number of open competitions for both visitors and members. However with prior arrangement with the club, visitors are gladly welcomed for casual tee-times. For more information about this, please contact the club directly. Green fees for the course are very reasonable and vary with the seasons, discounts are also available for groups of 10 or more visiting players which offer great value.

Due to its location just outside of Dublin, the Castle Club and course are easily accessible and there is an abundance of accommodation available for visiting players. In terms of things to see and do around the area, Dublin has it all. From large shopping areas to the ever popular Guinness Museum. There is something for everything both on and off the golf course which makes this an ideal place to spend a short golfing break.

Played the Castle in May after reading about it on this website and also noting its rave reviews in the Pocket Guide. I was very impressed and it exceeded my expectations. I am not generally a lover of inland courses but this is one of the best, if not the best inland course I've played in Ireland. Thoroughly recommended.
