The Montgomerie Course at Carton House Golf Club is ideally located in the town of Maynooth in the North of County Kildare and is only a mere 22km from the centre of the capital, Dublin. Although the golf course is close to the capital it still exudes the serenity and charm similar to those situated more rurally and this makes it an ideal location for those coming from further afield.
The club consists of two courses, The Montgomerie and The O’Meara. Although the Club itself dates back to the 17th century. The Montgomerie course was opened in July 2002 and was designed by the renowned golfer, Colin Montgomerie who has said of the course that he is “privileged” to be associated with it.
This adventurous course has been honoured with the presence of some of the most esteemed golfers in the world as it played host to the Irish Open in both 2005 and 2006 as well as in 2013. This fact shines through with regards to the facilities both on and off the green and the pride of both the club and its staff is apparent.
In terms of design and play the course has a very classic feel yet is a test of golfers’ skills and is also highly strategic in nature. The designer took inspiration from some of the greatest and most prominent links golf courses in the world and this shines through when playing.
Expect a great array of features when playing here; from extensive, lush fairways to plentiful, challenging bunkers. Add to this the undulating yet impeccable greens and you will find that it is an unforgettable course which is an enjoyable test of skills.
At a generous 7300m in length and with a par of 72, these will be a delightful 18 holes to play in the stunning surroundings of parkland.
Carton House is one of the most prestigious private golf clubs in Ireland, however visitors and guests are warmly welcomed from every corner of the globe. Tee times for the course for visitors vary however there is a good general selection of times so there is something to suit everyone here.
With regards to green fees, the club offers some excellent rates particularly when you consider what a high end golfing establishment it is. Furthermore the rates remain relatively stable throughout the year and only vary slightly depending on the season. This further highlights the quality of the greens as they are of a very similar standard throughout the year which is thanks mainly to the dedicated team of green staff at Carton House.
Originally a stable block which has been converted in to a beautiful club house, the facilities here are extensive and will appeal to all natures. From relaxed lounge bars to the more formal, fine-dining Linden Tree Restaurant as well as a well-stocked golf shop and secure locker rooms there is everything you will need both before and after your game of golf.
The excellent 4-star Carton House Hotel is located on site for those in need of accommodation and boasts features such as a pool, Spa and conference facilities which can create an excellent balance to your stay. Dublin International Airport is within half an hour’s drive from the course also making it easily accessible from most worldwide locations.

A real challenge but great!16/08/2013this review is the subjective opinion of a GOLFBOO user and not of GOLFBOO S.LIn my opinion, this is a fantastic course which is in superb condition! The course is set in some spectacular scenery which only added to the game. You need to think about each shot as the course is challenging. Watch out for the bunkers!
Average rating obtained byThis rating for Carton House. is the average of 9 ratings obtained from www.top100golfcourses.co.ukJust come back from Ireland after playing three top courses - The K club, The Hermitage and The Montgomerie at Carton House. All courses were relatively tough in their own way, but The Montgomerie was the most bland, featureless and uninspiring. On the plus side I like the fact that there are a lot of bunkers and they are really deep. This is proper punishment for not finding the fairway. The greens were quite quick and had various contours but they were manageable for a 13 handicapper like me. I would say play this course at least once to test your skills at keeping out of the bunkers, but because there is no real stunning scenery to speak of I won't be returning (despite carding a 86 for my best round of the week).
