The inland Deerpark golf course at Carlow Golf Club offers a refreshing change from the links courses which tend to dominate Ireland. Found in County Carlow in the West of Ireland the course was once home to, yes you’ve guessed it, a wild deer park. The county town of Carlow is a short drive away in a south westerly direction.

The club itself was established in 1899 as the Leinster Golf Club, yet in 1922 the club moved to a larger more suitable location and was renamed. The original 18-hole course laid out in 1922 was created by Cecil Barcroft who was an established player at the time. The course played on today is very much the same as the one that was reviewed and tweaked just before the start of the Second World War by the renowned Tom Simpson and his assistant Molly Gourlay.

Of a parkland style; this course measures around 5740 metres and has a par of 70 with a slope of 70 also. It has plenty to offer for golfers of all styles; the greens at the Deerpark course are slick and dog-legs are numerous and play beautifully. The designer was generous with water hazards, however there is a good balance between these and the other features of the course. The elevated greens really allow players to open their shoulders but caution is advised as the course features numerous tricky and tightly positioned bunkers that can add difficulty for some players.

The facilities at the course comprise of the usual selection of installations including bar, restaurant and clubhouse. Club and cart hire are also available and there is a putting green here also. Sadly at this course you are unable, at present, to hire caddies although due to its design and nature this is not a fact that causes great issues.

Tee times for visitors to this course vary throughout the year and can involve either general visitor booking or open competition days which the course regularly holds and are available to both members and visitors. Green fees for the course have fixed rates for either weekday or weekend play but discounts and offers are sometimes available for those who book last minute and for players that are prepared to avoid the busiest times of play.

Deerpark course is ideally located in County Carlow and by car is only an hour south of Dublin meaning that transport links to the club by most methods are good and well established. Accommodation in the nearby town of Carlow offers a good variety for visitors to choose from and there is something to suit all tastes.

Carlow was on the list of must plays for a long time, however, it was also one of those one's that seemed to get overlooked deemed to always be a 'next time' course. Well the stars fell into alignment last week! This course is simply superb, forget about Ryder Cup or WGC venues this is the best Traditional Parkland course in Ireland. A tremendous variety of classic holes wend their way around, up and over the land. It's simple guys you simply must try the Simpson masterpiece that is Carlow...you will not be disappointed.
