The golf course at the Buncrana Golf Club can be found in the far north of mainland Ireland nestled close to the border that the country shares with Northern Ireland. Lying within County Donegal the course here is a hidden gem and is sadly overlooked by many that visit the area. Overlooking the shores of the tranquil Lough Swilly all that play here are sure to find this a unique and interesting course and a peaceful location.

The course is cited as the “oldest nine hole links course in Ireland” which is quite some claim in a country so historically linked with the sport. The club was founded back in 1890 and was originally called the Buncrana Municipal Golf Club, it was fully affiliated with the Golfing Union of Ireland in 1951 and in 1995 the clubs name was changed to its current one. It is clear that the club and course both have a long and interesting history and this is a fact that is apparent to all that play here.

From the white tees the course here measures 2173 metres and has a par of 33. It is of a seaside links style and the features here are typical of the style. This is a challenging yet enjoyable course which has seen a number of upgrades and redevelopments over the years to create this high calibre course that is played on today.

Facilities here are fair and the clubhouse was refurbished back in 2000. There are locker and shower facilities for all to use as well a reception room and function room which can be hired for a number of events. Green fee rates here are exceptional value for money and the club prides itself on being a facility that is accessible to all. Tee time availability is generally good and although it changes with the seasons there should be a time to suit all if booked in advance.

The club is somewhat secluded which makes for a serene golfing location however it can take some time to access the area. However it is more than worth it for the great golfing experience that can be had here. There are a number of hotels in and around the local area but the Inishowen Gateway Hotel is a popular option with many.

This is a small 9 hole course which has some of the most spectacular views I have ever withnessed on a golf course. It is right on the shore of lough Swilly in the Town of Buncrana. The course it's self is extremely tricky, with narrow fairways, lush (but not overly long) rough and what I have to say are truely magnificent greens, probably the most true I have ever played on. Kudos to the greenkeeper. The 3rd hole (a 240yd monster of a Par 3), The monster 5th hole (600yd Par 5) right along the banks of Lough Swilly and the aptly named 8th The Calamity, (380yd Par 4) with its green elevated on a plateau some 10 feet above the fairway are absolutely stunning golf holes. I am a 10 handicapper and this course tested me all the way round. Superb, I can't wait to return next summer.
