Situated in the heart of Ireland is the renowned Birr Golf Club and its associated golf course. Found within County Offaly in the Irish Midlands the area is sometimes overlooked by visiting golfers which is a crying shame as there are some excellent courses in the area with Birr being a prime example. Just to the North of the quaint town of Birr itself, the local area is steeped in history and there are a number of places of interest for visitors including Birr Castle.

The club here was founded back in 1893 which makes it amongst the oldest in Ireland. The original holes were designed and laid out by local members however in more recent years professionals such as the well-known Eddie Connaughton have worked extensively on the course.

Measuring 5470 metres from the yellow tees, this 18 hole course isn’t the longest in the world however its Par 70 status is fair. Of a parkland style, the features here are extensive and players are sure to enjoy a visit here. Said features include carefully undulating terrain with many hills and ridges as well as a lot of mature woodland and trees to provide ample hazards. This is a generally enjoyable but challenging course which is suitable for golfers of most levels.

Facilities here are good and include a well-appointed professional golf shop from which players can hire a variety of items. There is also a spacious and welcoming bar and restaurant area for players to enjoy here. Practice facilities are also good and include a driving range with a number of covered bays and a number of PGA professionals are affiliated with the club and can provide coaching and tuition by prior arrangement.

Tee times for visitors to this course have fair general availability and green fee rates are very reasonable when you consider the quality of this course. A number of packages and deals are available for large parties of players which makes this a great destination for society golf. It should be noted that tee time availability is subject to change with the seasons and therefore prior booking is advised.

Due, in part, to its central location road links to this club from much of the rest of Ireland are good and players should have no problem in accessing the area.  With regards to accommodation, the best option for visitors is nearby Birr which has a number of hotels and guest houses which should be suited to most.

We stopped off to play Birr on the way from Dublin to Lahinch. None of us were expecting much but we all came away having enjoyed Birr very much. It’s no championship course but it’s a little cracker and for €25 a round it’s an Irish bargain.
