Found in North West Ireland in County Sligo is the Ballymote Golf Club and its golf course. Set in some prime Irish countryside, the course here offers some excellent views over a number of beautiful natural features such as glens and lakes. The city of Sligo itself is just over 25 km away to the North and visitors are sure to find many attractions and places of interest there and the proximity of this bustling city surely adds to the appeal.

The club here has an interesting and rich history and has been affiliated with the Golfing Union of Ireland since 1947 but a club of some form in the local area has been in existence since the early 1930’s. The current site of the club and the course is more modern and only moved there in the past twenty or so years.

This is a nine hole course which measures 2635 metres and has a par of 35. It can be enjoyed as just nine holes or players are more than welcome to play the full 18. Features of this course have a very natural and traditional feel about them and water comes in to play on a number of the holes here.

Facilities at the club are fair and players should find all basics that they should need here. Tee time availability for visitors to this course is generally good and players are sure to find a time to suit most. Green fee rates are also reasonable although they are subject to change throughout the seasons.

Due to its proximity with the city of Sligo, getting to the club is relatively straightforward by road and onward links from Sligo are strong. With regards to accommodation, there are a number of options in and around the local area which should appeal to most tastes and budgets however for those wanting something particular Sligo will have more to offer for all.

Played this course at the end of what has clearly not been the best summer County Sligo has ever seen. Was rather bemused initially to arrive at a deserted clubhouse/shack and carpark, but after putting my greenfees in an envelope and slipping it into a tin, I teed off on the uphill first hole. As previous reviewers have commented, the 2nd and 7th are the stand-out holes on this course. The 2nd is a short par-3 with a green a very long way beneath the tee - the ball was in the air for an eternity before it finally came to earth - and the 7th is an inviting downhill short par-4 with an island green nestling on the shores of Ballinascarrow Lake. In general the course is in good nick but was utterly saturated and I was basically playing winter golf in early September. I'd guess that it would need at least a month without rain to properly dry it out, which is unlikely in the west of Ireland. Most of the holes have blind shots and it's very hilly, so take your walking boots. If you're lucky enough to be in the area during a prolonged spell of good weather then it would be a pleasant way to spend an afternoon. Should be nice and quiet too!
