Found in the heart of Ireland the golf course at Athlone Golf Club is in an extremely unique location that offers a perfect spot for a round of golf. Although found in the centrally located County Roscommon the course is located in the beautiful Hodson Bay overlooking Lough Ree meaning that the panoramas and scenery here are second to none.
The golf club was founded originally in 1892 and comprised of 9 holes. The design and layout of the course is the accumulation of the work of many of the best golf course architects of the generation. Hawtree & Co as well as Eddie Hackett have put their ideas and skill to use here however the course as we know it today is thanks to Eddie Connaughton, another seasoned designer, who redeveloped the course over three years starting in 2003. During its rich history the course was extended to 18 holes however the exact date and designer is undisclosed.
Of a parkland style nature but with great proximity to the waters of Lough Ree, the course offers a par of 72 and measures 6011 metres from the white tees. Features here are varied and interesting, expect expansive greens, clever use of bunkering and tricky tree-lined fairways. Elevated tees and the nearby Lough Ree also come into play at times to make for a challenging yet enjoyable course that should appeal to golfers of most strengths.
Facilities at Athlone are good and can provide members and visitors with everything they need. There is a bar and restaurant on site offering a variety of refreshments for players to enjoy after their rounds. Practice facilities include a putting green as well as chipping green complete with bunkers. The club also boasts a professional golf shop and locker rooms complete with showers.
Although the club here is mainly member driven they do welcome visitors however these are usually in the form of societies and larger parties. With regards to green fee rates for said parties they are rather reasonable and the club offers a number of different packages which can appeal to all, a particularly good choice is the option to play and stay at a nearby hotel and this offers fantastic value for money. Tee times for parties are quite varied but can only be discovered by contacting the club directly.
Thanks to its central location getting to the club is relatively easy and the nearby town of Athlone has a number of well-established transport links with the rest of Ireland. Accommodation in and around the local area is good for visitors which is partly due to its proximity with other golf courses such as the one at Glasson Golf Club, here you will find a hotel but there are also closer ones to Athlone course such as the Hodson Bay Hotel. There will be something to appeal to all tastes and budgets.

It lets you know what its all about from the 1st tee box, a long straigth drive fron an elevated tee. It is set mostly around a lough and some of the views are spectacular and the holes towards the water are definately the highlight. Overall it is in good condition and is a fair challenge.
