Athenry Golf Club and its golf course are found centrally within Ireland in the western county of Galway. The site lies around 16 km to the east of the bustling city of Galway which has plenty to offer to visitors in the way of attractions such as the stunning Galway Bay as well as a number of historical castles and cathedrals. Athenry itself is a small town which still also has a number of places of interest and all that visit here are sure to receive a warm and traditional Irish welcome.

The foundations of the golf club date back to the beginning of the 20th century although there is some confusion regarding the exact year with some sources stating 1902 and others 1904. One thing that is certain is that it was not associated fully with the Golfing Union of Ireland until 1929. The course as it is known today is a combination of the design efforts of Eddie Connaughton and Eddie Hackett both of whom have designed numerous courses.

This is a mixture of parkland and heathland styles which is made up of 18 holes, is measures some 5859 metres from the white tees and has a par of 70. Features here have a distinctly traditional feel and a large forest forms an impressive backdrop and adds to the ambience of play here. Drainage here is excellent allowing the course to be played on all year round which further adds to its appeal.

Facilities at this club are good and there are both ladies and gents locker rooms for all to use. There is also a bar and restaurant area for players to enjoy which offer a variety of refreshments. Furthermore there is a well-appointed professional golf shop offering a good selection of merchandise, equipment and apparel.

Tee time availability for visitors to this course are fair and there should be a time to suit all during weekdays however weekend availability is more restricted. Green fee rates are very reasonable and reflect the quality of the course and facilities. The club is also proud to host a number of open competitions throughout the course of the year which are open to both members and visitors alike.

Thanks to the proximity of the club with the city of Galway transport links to the rest of Ireland are good by road and Northern Ireland is also relatively easy to get to. Accommodation options in and around the local area are good and there should be something to suit all tastes and budgets.

Played at Athenry on a lovely warm day in late May, they are in the middle of rebuilding their clubhouse, it looks pretty impressive, but when I was there they were operating out of portacabins, but it was fine. The course was great, the fairways and the greens were impeccable, the greens were quite quick and it took me a while to get the hang of them. But I really enjoyed it and would play there again in the future. The cost for May 2007 was 40 Euro for 18 holes. Just a note of caution, the course is about 8kms from Athenry just off the Galway Road.

The place is clean and the people are nice. The food is alright. The place can be played once for a comfortable round. That's enough but then also.
