Found within County Laois in the Irish Midlands is the golf course at the Abbeyleix Golf Club. The site lies just over 10 km to the north of the town of Durrow which is steeped in culture and history and its heritage shines through to all that visit here. The town boasts fair amenities and there are a number of places of interest locally including the majestic Castle Durrow and the beautiful Bishops Wood which is a must visit for avid walkers and nature lovers.

The beginnings of the club here date back to the late 19th century, 1895 to be exact, however it was not until 1905 that the club was fully affiliated with the Golfing Union of Ireland. During its history the club has played at a number of locations in and around the local area and even had a period of inactivity between 1937 and 1948. However the course as it is known today was designed by the well-known Mel Flanagan and opened for play in September 2000.

The course here is of a parkland style and the greens are soil based. Its 18 holes measure some 5561 metres from the white tees and have a par of 72. Features are very traditional and players should expect rolling terrain and plenty of mature woodland. This course can be enjoyed by players of all skill levels and is sure to be an interesting challenge.

Facilities at the club are fair and all visitors should most things they should need. Refreshments are available in the clubhouse and all are sure to receive a warm Irish welcome here.

Although the club has a strong member presence, visitors are warmly welcomed and there should be a tee-time for all if booked far enough in advance. Green fee rates are very reasonable here and offer good value for money. Both tee times and green fee rates are subject to change with the season and this should be noted when booking.

Thanks to its central location access to the club by road from much of the rest of Ireland is good and the nearest major transport hubs offering onward links are probably those of Kilkenny and Portlaoise which lie to the south and north respectively. Accommodation options in the area are fair and there is likely to be something to suit most tastes.
